The Trust was under financial pressure but had identified opportunities to reduce medical expenditure, which had increased year on year with no corresponding change in activity, and required expert support.

We carried out a rapid diagnostic which highlighted that there were major opportunities to improve the job planning process and deliver greater value from the medical workforce including a reduction in temporary staffing.
Identified an opportunities of over £1m in relation to job planning, SPAs, on-call allowances, temporary staffing and theatre productivity.
Implemented a new job plan policy and guidance, including training clinicians and managers in best practice which delivered a reduction in non-clinical PAs.
Sharpened the temporary staffing and vacancy control process reducing of high cost staff.
Realised recurrent savings of £1.3m
Re-aligned SPAs for leadership, management and audit releasing 43 SPAs
Devised a plan to deliver further savings through improved productivity in theatres and reduced waiting lists sessions, which the Trust subsequently implemented.
